New Swing The Flight of the Condor at Baños

El Vuelo del Cóndor will certainly be the new highlight from Baños. You find it before reaching the Tree House where there is another swing, but not as exciting as this one. The Flight of the Condor has enough security (full body harness, helmets, and extra rope), to make you feel how the condors take off from their nest. It was a great experience this week, and I look forward to come back there and film the flight!

How Public/Private Mass Oriented Bathrooms Should be in Ecuador

It was a great surprise to find that the bathrooms were finally ready at Quitsato Sundial by Guachalá, at the precise Equator Line in Cayambe.

The images speak for themselves: for men and children of every hight, and with precise "information" depicted on every wall about the "Coriolis Effect" and how to look at it while in the bathroom. I couldn't see the womens bathroom, buth "they are always right" anyways!. You must be there to live it!

Cotopaxi in Eruption Again After 135 Years

The Cotopaxi Volcano finally erupted again after 135 years of beein asleep, since the last eruptive period from 1877 to 1880. It is an incredible event of the nature to see (from a safe distance), but it presents many challenges for the inhabitants of the area surrounding it.

South Quito is located aproximately 60 km north west from the volcano, and today, after the 4 main freatic exposions in which ash was expelled up to 8 km above the crater rim, some of that ash has been falling in the valleys surrounding Quito and in the main city too, not to say to the west and south west of the volcano. The flights towards Quito are cancelled for the momment, but we will keep you updated with this natural event.

We will be happy to organize a trip or adventure in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia or Galapagos for you. Visit us at www.surpasstravel.com.

View from Cumbaya to wards the Cotopaxi. Clearing up little by little.

Cotopaxi Volcano Shows Sustancial Increase of Activity

The Cotopaxi Volcano, our mighty colosus and beautiful snow-caped volcano, has shown in the last two months a sustancial increase on its activity.

On clear days it is possible to see the sulfur and water vapor clouds that come out of its caldera. Today the activity scale has changed from moderate to moderate-high, since the Geophysic Institut from the National Politechnical School has registered more than 107 tremors and tow long term events.

This last sunday there were more long term events and vapor emissions that reached up to 1,000 over the volcano's caldera.

All the tourism activities at the volcano and Cotopaxi National Park are normal.

Read the latest notice from "El Comercio" about the volcano, in spanish, here:

Pope's Visit Trigers Renovation of Basilica in Quito

Yesterday a group of canadian tourists and myself were walking throught the Old Town of Quito, and as we climbed up to one of the towers at the Basilica, we noticed that the roofs are beeing finally waterproofed, and concrete is beeing restored.

It has been more than 70 years since the first cement was used to bind stones, and was poored in columns, and the weather has been since then slowly affecting it.

It is a great effort of the city of Quito to preserve ist monuments, it costs a lot of money every year, but must be done.

Galapagos is Still Growing

A new volcanic eruption war registered on the early morning of the 25th of May, 2015. This time it was the Wolf volcano at Isabela Island, that had been inactive since several years. The eruption does not affect other islands nor inhabitants of Galapagos, since it is at the northern side of Isabela Island, a remote and isolated part of the archipiel. The lava from this volcano has reached the ocean and many people on board of the 70 cruises on route near Wolf volcano, that are navigating the archipiel, have been blessed with this magnificent view of the power of nature.

See latest story about it in El Comercio in spanish:

Go out! Travel, live, experience. Remember... Travel again from home

I saw this video on internet and it is the reaity now of "many generations", not only the youngsters. Travelling is a way to put you again in front of uncertainty, to be more aware of the inmensity of the world and the opportunities that it offers, to be aware that you are still alive.

It is great too to be in the places where there is no WiFi, no conection to the outer world, but only to your head and soul.

Be aware of technology, use it wisely.

Look Up. I have 422 friends, yet I am lonely. I speak to all of them everyday, yet none of them really know me. The problem I have sits in the spaces between, looking into their eyes, or at a name on a screen. I took a step back, and opened my eyes, I looked around, and then realised that this media we call social, is anything but when we open our computers, and it’s our doors we shut. All this technology we have, it’s just an illusion, of community, companionship, a sense of inclusion yet when you step away from this device of delusion, you awaken to see, a world of confusion. A world where we’re slaves to the technology we mastered, where our information gets sold by some rich greedy bastard. A world of self-interest, self-image, self-promotion, where we share all our best bits, but leave out the emotion. We are at our most happy with an experience we share, but is it the same if no one is there. Be there for you friends, and they’ll be there too, but no one will be, if a group message will do. We edit and exaggerate, we crave adulation, we pretend we don’t notice the social isolation. We put our words into order, until our lives are glistening, we don’t even know if anyone is listening. Being alone isn’t the problem, let me just emphasize, that if you read a book, paint a picture, or do some exercise, you are being productive, and present, not reserved or recluse, you’re being awake and attentive, and putting your time to good use. So when you’re in public, and you start to feel alone, put your hands behind your head, and step away from the phone. You don’t need to stare at your menu, or at your contact list, just talk to one another, and learn to co-exist. I can’t stand to hear the silence, of a busy commuter train, when no one wants to talk through the fear of looking insane. We’re becoming unsocial, it no longer satisfies to engage with one another, and look into someone’s eyes. We’re surrounded by children, who since they were born, watch us living like robots, and think it’s the norm. It’s not very likely you will make world’s greatest dad, if you cant entertain a child without a using an iPad. When I was a child, I would never be home, I’d be out with my friends, on our bikes we would roam. We’d ware holes in our trainers, and graze up our knees; we’d build our own clubhouse, high up in the trees. Now the parks are so quiet, it gives me a chill to see no children outside and the swings hanging still. There’s no skipping or hopscotch, no church and no steeple, we’re a generation of idiots, smart phones and dumb people. So look up from your phone, shut down that display, take in your surroundings, and make the most of today. Just one real connection is all it can take, to show you the difference that being there can make. Be there in the moment, when she gives you the look, that you remember forever, as when love overtook. The time you first hold her hand, or first kiss her lips, the time you first disagree, but still love her to bits. The time you don’t need to tell hundreds, about what you’ve just done, because you want to share the moment, with just this one. The time you sell your computer, so you can buy a ring, for the girl of your dreams, who is now the real thing. The time you want to start a family, and the moment when, you first hold your baby girl, and get to fall in love again. The time she keeps you up at night, and all you want is rest, and the time you wipe away the tears, as your baby flees the nest. The time your little girl returns, with a boy for you to hold, and the day he calls you granddad, and makes you feel real old The time you take in all you’ve made, just by giving life attention, and how your glad you didn’t waste it, by looking down at some invention. The time you hold your wife’s hand, and sit down beside her bed you tell her that you love her, and lay a kiss upon her head. She then whispers to you quietly, as her heart gives a final beat, that she’s lucky she got stopped, by that lost boy in the street. But none of these times ever happened, you never had any of this, When you’re too busy looking down, you don’t see the chances you miss. So look up from your phone, shut down those displays, we have a finite existence, a set number of days. Why waste all our time getting caught in the net, as when the end comes, nothing’s worse than regret. I am guilty too, of being part of this machine, this digital world, where we are heard but not seen. Where we type and don’t talk, where we read as we chat, where we spend hours together, without making eye contact. Don’t give in to a life where you follow the hype, give people your love, don’t give them your like. Disconnect from the need to be heard and defined Go out into the world, leave distractions behind. Look up from your phone, shut down that display, stop watching this video, live life the real way.

Looking for the Cock of the Rock at Mindo

People must be a bit crazy to travel across the world to look one day for a bird... Of course, that is what having a life experience means! The cock of the rock is our guest. We spend an hour at a leck or place where you "normally" see "the bird" (if... the weather is good, the morning is clear, if it does not rain, if you are quiet enough, if you don't flash with your cammera's flash at the birds, if you can sit for about 45 minutes at the same hard wood, if... etc.), but I guess, that is a real experience.

We did saw many of the birds that time. It was amazing to hear them singing and trying to catch the attention of the female. It is certainly worth again the experience!

Mindo: One of the Five Hotspots from Pichincha Province Cloud Forest Area

Pichincha is one of our provinces where Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is located. The metropolitan disctrict was expanded in the last 10 years, and now a days the Mindo Nambillo Reserve is part of Quito.

This reserve created in 1988 is considered a biodiversity hotspot. It has circa 20.000 hectars at altitudes that go from 1400 to 4720 meters above sea level.

It is well known by birdwatchers because of the diversity and endemism of bird species, and also because of the proximity and accessibility from Quito.

If you are looking for a "quick view" or "light" adventure within a tropical rain and cloud forest, Mindo and its surroundings are the ideal area for an overnight or a longer stay.

Ecuador Towards Clean Energy

As a Tour Operator, we are concerned with what happens in Ecuador regarding its culture and nature. Ecuador has been designing and building in the last 4 year many hydro electric power plants to change the "energy matrix" towards one that is sustainable in time, and environmentally cleaner as other alternatives.

All this projects will have an effect on the river's ecosystems, damaging for sure a certain degree of the actual ecologycal balance, but in the long term the balance between this construction, and the reduction of emissions in the country, will be positive.

It is impossible to have any type of energy without affecting the environment on a certain degree, and on the other hand nobody is willing to live less comfortably and consume less electricity, so we don't need to build this hydroelectric power plants. That is the path that all the emergying economies have to follow until they jump into the post modern world, where other more expensive and smaller alternatives, and with a smaller impact in the environment, are availiable. Ecuador is not the exception to the emerging countires.

The project Manduryacu is the first to be finished, of the 8 major hydro electrical plants that will supply electicity for Ecuador in the comming decades.
