Puyango Petrified Forest: One of the three biggest deposits in the world

Did you know that? The Puyango Petrified Forest at the south of Ecuador is considered one of the three biggest deposits of petrified wood from all over the world. The logs remaining here date from 60 to 500 milion years before our time, and it is impressive to be able to see the tree rings very clearly. The logs are in some cases about two meters in diameter and 15 meters in lenght. Is the only place in the world where you can still see a living forest on top of the petrified wood that resembles the old forest that once covered this area.

The famous paleobotanist Shoemaker, that studied the forest between 1975 and 1976, stated that the size of this deposit is comparable to the one found in Arizona. Shoemaker is well known because of the comet he discovered and observed while crashing against a planet; the commet is named Shoemaker-Levy 9.
